One of the things Pete Baker told me was that the "proper" colour for the lathe was categorized as RAL 3005 in paint terms. A bit of googling finds that Johnstones do this as a special mix, incorporating primer and topcoat in one go, tidy.
The website I found (The Paint Shed) appears to deal in hard-to-find paints of this nature. I'll get a small can in and test the results.

The can of paint arrived, and wasn't it just gorgeous?
I painted a piece that I haven't an immediate use for, and here it is, along with one of the few pieces that remain in their original colours
